At the App Brewery, we use Firebase extensively in our teaching curriculum. When students build a WhatApp clone, it’s powered by Firebase. When we talk about cloud databases we also use Firebase as an example. So it was with incredible pleasure that we invited Laurence Moroney, Staff Developer Advocate at Google to come to our office and take the App Brewery community on a lap around Firebase.

Laurence is a well-known speaker at conferences such as Google I/O, Microsoft Build, and others. He’s passionate about game development and, of course, the Android ecosystem. But we were surprised to learn that he is also a talented screenwriter and has published several children’s sci-fi novels.

The Firebase team has been hard at work adding new features to make app development easier independent developers, including Notifications, File Storage, Analytics, Remote Config, Dynamic Links, and much more.

At Google I/O, announcements around Firebase came one after the other and we could barely keep our excitement in check as we learnt about how Firebase was going to become far more than just a replacement for Facebook’s Parse service, which was recently decommissioned.

We looked at each of the Firebases technologies in detail – everything from their realtime database, to remote configuration, to identity, to analytics and more. From the concentrated looks on every attendee’s face, we could tell that the knowledge imparted was invaluable.

We also discovered some of the tools that help developers grow their apps once their apps have been developed and deployed – such as App Indexing, which keeps an app in front of users when they search for content!

You can learn more about Firebase and keep up to date on its developments on the Google blog.
